Regular Classes

Our regular classes include teens and adults ages 13 and up.

We have members of all ages, physical abilities, and medical conditions.  It is never too late to start training in martial arts, and we will help you find a path to health, wellness, and self-improvement that works for you.

We focus highly on safety and self-awareness, encouraging students to listen to their bodies to avoid injury.

New students are welcome to start at any time.  Please arrive about 20 minutes early for your first class to get signed up, and about 10-15 minutes early on regular nights in order to have time to change, etc.

Regular Cuong Nhu classes meet:

Tuesday and Thursday nights (All Ranks, beginners to advanced) from 7-8:45 p.m.

Wednesday nights:

Focused individual training and conditioning from 7:15-8:45 p.m. in Studio A (enter corner door closest to Front St.)

What to expect in a typical class:

Students warm up and condition together at the beginning of each class.

After this, we do basic techniques (kihon) together.

Usually we then break into groups based on the ranks present, with beginners being given a separate group and instructor.

Some nights will have special topics scheduled, which are essentially small seminars on subjects such as: sparring, weapons, throws, jointlocks, knife self-defense, applications, and more.

We have several active Sensei (instructors) so students get plenty of individual focus on their needs.

Uniforms are not required for beginners.  Just wear loose, comfortable clothing such as sweatpants.

Kids and Family Classes

Our kids and family classes teach self-defense, but also focus on self-control, personal growth, and physical and moral fitness.  Parents and children are highly encouraged to attend together, allowing everyone to improve their health, plus creating a highly satisfying and rewarding quality time to spend together.

Beginners start with an introduction to Cuong Nhu's basic principles, etiquette, stances, blocks, escapes, and strikes.

Kids Karate class meets:

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m.

New students are welcome at any time. Ages accepted are normally between 7-12.

Emphasis at this level is mainly on increasing basic body awareness and self-confidence.

Parents are always welcome to join in the class and train along with the kids!  Parents usually progress more rapidly and serve as class helpers and eventually even assistant teachers.

We meet throughout the year, unless class falls on a major holiday, or if there is a snow day.

Our policy is to cancel class if night classes are cancelled for Northern Michigan University; this is announced by 5 p.m. and the status can be checked by calling 906-227-2777

We also try to announce as early as possible via Facebook and email, and encourage everyone to be safe and use your best judgement regarding travel to class.
